We've already given you a guide to eating out on Thanksgiving. But if you're cooking in this year, you're in the market for a big, fat bird, plus all the fixin's. Whether you're looking for a fresh whole turkey or a ready-to-eat meal, we've got your guide to Thanksgiving shopping in New York.
This guide is just for the main meal; pie will get its own post later this week. (Think of it as your Serious Eats Thanksgiving dessert.) And we'll have a separate piece on farmer's market shopping for a locavore's Thanksgiving.

The Big Names: Citarella
Citarella's free-range turkeys start at $2.49/lb, for a bird from 8-30 lbs. They also offer Bell & Evans for $2.99/lb, Kosher turkeys from $3.99/lb, organic turkeys from $5.99/lb, smoked turkeys from $4.99/lb, and turkey breasts from $4.99/lb (4-7 or 10-12 lbs). Nontraditionalists: their butcher shop will also have Cornish hen, capons, goose, suckling pig, pheasant, poussin, and more.
Prepared foods: starters including pumpkin ravioli and sweet potato bisque; fully roasted turkeys, turkey breasts, or Turkey Wellington; stuffed squash and other vegetables; chestnut, sausage, wild rice, and traditional stuffing.

New York markets will sell their own free-range turkeys from $1.99/lb, Plainville Farms brined turkeys from $3.99/lb, and Kosher Valley turkeys from $2.99/lb.
Prepared foods: Plainville Farms fully cooked turkeys also available, both standard and organic; "Complete Thanksgiving Dinners," with stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans, cranberry-orange relish, and turkey gravy; a vegan Thanksgiving meal with pumpkin-apple soup, a wild rice "Holiday Roast," green beans, and mushroom gravy.
