World Toilet Day - squat's it all about?
Notice anyone randomly stoop into a squat position yesterday? Well, there's a small chance they're a bit loopy but it's probably safe to say they were doing their bit for
World Toilet Day 2009.
The campaign celebrates the importance of sanitation and aims to raise awareness for the 2.5 billion people (nearly half of the world's population) who don't have access to toilets and proper, clean facilities.
The stark reality is that poor sanitation risks people's health, strips their dignity, and kills 1.8 million a year with the majority being children - whilst diarrhea diseases kill five times as many children in the developing world as HIV/AIDS, totally 5,000 child deaths every single day.
The facts make for grim reading, emphasising the mammoth task that the campaign faces but with a little bit of help, they feel they can start putting things right.
Numerous events took place across the UK to raise awareness and, ultimately, funds to help solve this global sanitation crisis, including a chilling scene constructed in the Hyde Park Corner men's toilets - complete with rubbish dump, maggots, rusted pipes, a stagnant stream and a unique toilet scent, Eau de Toilet. Members of the public hesitantly entered and experienced first-hand the paradox between the above-ground world of London's beautiful Hyde Park and the loos below.
Donations can be made for this worthy cause at the
World Toilet Day website.

England captain in a spin with plumbing attempt
The master batsman proved not to be a master craftsman as Kevin Pietersen attempted a bit of plumbing for charity.
The England cricket captain was supporting a Barnardo's scheme to help unemployed youngsters from deprived backgrounds learn a skilled trade such as plumbing, electrics and carpentry.
All-rounder KP, a dab-hand with bat and ball, was unable to show the same finesse when confronted with copper piping that needed bending at charity skills centre 'The Hub' in London's East End last week.
"Many of these youths used to bunk off school or get into trouble with police," he said. "But they are turning their lives around with Barnardo's help. It's inspiring to see," Pietersen said.
Barnardo's launched a Teens' Speech project inviting youngsters all over the country to upload their video message on issues important to them, and their efforts will be displayed the homepages of Myspace and YouTube on Christmas day.
As for captain Kev - stick to cricket mate!

Political Debate about Green Energy Just a quick couple of lines to draw your attention to the BBC Blog Question and Answer session they had with Ed Miliband, Secretary of State for Climate Change. It seems to have fired up quite a debate about the way forward for our vast energy consumption in the UK (Please excuse the pun).
A point was well made about the cost of planning applications for solar panels. What do you think??? Please let us know by commenting here on our blog.
Stainless Steel - An Investment for Life Why should I buy Stainless Steel?
Our 304 stainless steel towel rails are hand-made with care and attention to the smallest detail. The welds are of the finest quality on the market. Our towel rails carry a lifetime manufacturer’s guarantee of quality and come supplied with brackets, blanking plugs, air vents and fixings.
Manufactured almost entirely from recycled materials, they are environmentally friendly, 100% recyclable, 30% more durable and 15% more energy efficient than your average chrome plated towel rail. The extra efficiency even gives you the option of installing a smaller radiator or towel rail and still generating the same amount of heating output as a larger product with chrome finish. This reduces the amount of space the rail takes up, conserves energy and saves you money on your heating bill.
They are also extremely easy to clean and maintain. A simple wash with soap or mild detergent and a rinse with clean water is all that’s required to remove most stains or dirty marks from the surface, and more stubborn markings can be removed with a stronger detergent such as Barkeepers’ Friend or with the use of a specialist stainless steel cleaning product.
Our towel rails are easily converted to a dual fuel option, providing warm fluffy towels even in the height of summer with the option to switch them off once you’re finished in the bathroom, and the heating element required for this simple conversion comes with a full 2 year manufacturer’s guarantee, unheard of in the field of electrical heating elements, where an element might carry a 6 month guarantee at most.
So although a stainless steel towel rail might be a little more expensive than some other possible alternatives, remember that when you buy a stainless steel product, you buy for life. When you also take into consideration the energy savings, the simple maintenance requirements and the quality of the product, the choice suddenly becomes very clear!
