The word Kashmir is originated from Ka means water and Shimir means to desiccate. Hence, Kashmir stands for a land desiccated from water. Ashoka the emperor is often credited with having founded the city of Srinagar. Jammu and Kashmir consists of three regions jammu, the kashmir valley and ladakh. Srinagar is the summer capital and Jammu its winter capital.
Kashmir was once a buddhist seat of learning. The Kashmir Valley is between himalayas and the pir panjal range. The jhelum river is the only major himalayan river which flows through the Kashmir valley.

Kashmir is a combination of disparate regions, religions and ethnicities. Kashmir is a gay, beautiful place and hawkers clamoring for attention. The loveliness of the valley spreads out like a glorious and gorgeous piece of silk. The streets of the valley are usually bursting with activity and noises. The surface of the valley is plain and abounds with springs, lakes and health resorts.

Kashmir Valley is the largest mountain state of India. Kashmir becomes cold considerably in the winter every year and receives the most snow. It currently has population of around 4 million. There are well-renowned Muslim shrines co-existing with hindu and buddhism that are held in highest esteem by the people of every faith. Hari Parbat is a wonderful examples of this communal harmony in pilgrimage centers where monuments of all three religions - a temple, mosque and gurudwara are standing side by side.
